I finished listening to Dragonfly in Amberon audiobook today - and I am so very, very glad that I have the next book, Voyager, loaded onto my MP3 player and ready to go.

Dragonfly in Amber is the second book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. The first book was really good, but the sequel blew me away - and I remember thinking that the first time I read it, too.

Spoiler alert - if you haven’t read the book, or don’t want to know any details - look away!

Gabaldon starts the book off in left field. Outlander ends with Claire and Jamie deciding to try to stop Prince Charlie from attempting to take back the throne of Scotland. So, when you pick up book two, you’re assuming it will pick up where you left off. Wrong. Dragonfly in Amber begins with Claire, now in her late forties, back in Scotland with her grown daughter Brianna. Her husband Frank has just passed away, and she’s come to Scotland to tell Brianna the truth about her conception.

As Claire tells her story to Brianna and historian Roger Wakefield, we are again transported back in time, and then the story picks up where it left off. Claire and Jamie take their places in society in Paris, Jamie working as a wine merchant, and stealing Prince Charlie’s dispatches.

The story takes Claire from a hospital for Paris’s downtrodden to King Louis XIV’s bedchamber to the battlefields of Scotland. The amount of research this book required must have been astronomical. Gabaldon writes in a very detailed manner, almost in real time, which puts you right there in the streets of Paris, the moors of Scotland, and in Claire’s head. After spending the past two months listening to these books, I feel like I know Claire and Jamie, Dougal and Colum, Murtagh, Fergus, Jenny and Ian. I can see them in my head and - thanks to Davina Porter’s brilliant reading - hear them, too.

Claire tells Brianna and Roger the entire story of how she and Jamie failed to stop the Uprising, and how Jamie sent her back through the stones to her own time, carrying his child, while he fully intended to die on Culloden field. After convincing Roger and Brianna of the truth of her story, and attempting to stop Geillis Duncan from going through the stones, Claire is the unsuspecting victim of the shocking news that Jamie failed in his final task.

Roger, the historian, tells her that Jamie meant to die on Culldoen field, but he didn’t. And then I heard the words, “The End.” I’m not kidding - if I didn’t already have Voyager loaded and ready to go, I would have gone crazy. And yes, I know I’ve already read the entire series, but it’s been a long time, and I forgot how involving they are, and how much Gabaldon likes to play with our emotions.

After hearing those words, I happily hit the skip button to skip the audiobook credits, and started Voyager.

I am listening to the Outlander series audiobooks for The Outlander Challenge, and my goal is to have them all finished before the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone, is released in September.
