Since I won last week’s Thursday’s Thoughts, I had the honor of choosing the question for the current edition. Here’s what I came up with:

“If you had his guarantee that he would read it, what one book would you give to President Obama - and why?”

The funny thing is that I came up with the question, and I almost stumped myself! I kept coming up with titles and then dismissing them for one reason or another. I finally decided to go with one of my favorite pieces of fiction: That Distant Land: Collected Stories by Wendell Berry.

Berry is a brilliant author, and this collection of stories is full of the beauty of life, along with the harsh realities for people who live off the land and in smaller communities. Love, life, beauty, war, pain, poverty, farming - all of these issues are addressed in beautifully written stories that inform the reader without ever preaching.

This is one book I plan on requiring my boys to read as teenagers, because Berry imbues his characters with integrity, honor, and courage, and these are all qualities I hope my boys will grow up to demonstrate. They are also characteristics that I hope President Obama can hold on to in spite of the cut-throat world of United States politics.
