The Sunday Salon - February 1, 2009 (The “why don’t I have any time to read?” edition)
I haven’t had nearly enough time to read this week! My kids’ schedule with outside activities, and then our daily schedule with homeschooling - boy, sometimes it just wipes me out. I’m too tired in the evening to read much more than the daily entry in The Intellectual Devotional: American History Edition and a few pages from Essays of the Masters and then I drift off.
With time in the car taking the kids to and fro, and time at the sink washing dishes, and time folding laundry, I did manage to finish the audiobook version of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. You can read my review here.
I’m still reading O Jerusalem by Laurie R. King, but for some reason, it’s not grabbing me like the other books in the series have. Maybe it’s because I can’t read more than a few pages at a time, and I haven’t even figured out what the mystery is! Plus, this one goes back in time to expound on some events in the first book, and so it’s like going backward in the relationship between Holmes and Russell. I won’t give up, though, because I want to read the whole series.
I’m also reading the short story collection The Shell Collector by Anthony Doerr, and I have enjoyed each story I’ve finished so far. I’ll be posting about some of them soon.
I started Testimony by Anita Shreve. Kevin and I take the kids to a local indoor pool a couple evenings a week, and after playing in the pool and (if I’m in a disciplined mood) swimming laps, I sit in the hot tub and read. In the winter, though, the lighting in the pool room isn’t great, so I purchased the large print edition of Testimony. It starts off with a bang, that’s for sure, and the subject matter is disturbing and intriguing. Not sure what I think yet, but I’m not very far into it.
So, if I find time to read today, aside from watching the Super Bowl, those are the books I’ll be reading. What are you reading today?

I am in the middle of Much Ado about Anne…not much time to read here either…so I am sneaking two or three minutes whenever I can. Enjoy the game and I hope you get some reading time in soon.
