Hannah pressed her lips together and I knew what she was thinking. Despite his professed love of art, Teddy would not approve. And she was right. There was something about the woman, the painting, that was dangerous. Subversive. And yet Hannah wanted it.

I’m working as a house maid on an estate in England shortly after World War I, growing up alongside the two young ladies of the house, although our lives couldn’t be more different. I am especially drawn to Hannah, the independent oldest daughter, who is the same age as me. She has dreams and aspirations of adventure and independence, but the chances of her realizing her dreams are very slim, thanks to her traditional-minded father and grandmother.
