Mini-reviews: Wanted, The Dark Knight, Eagle Eye, Ghost Town, and The Duchess

Here’s a quick run-down on some of the movies we’ve watched lately.

Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy: If you are the type who wants realism in your action films, skip it. If you can completely suspend your disbelief and just go along for a fun ride, then definitely watch this. It’s a perfect popcorn movie - and James McAvoy is extremely easy on the eyes. I missed his Scottish accent though.

The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Michael Cain, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Aaron Eckhart: I saw this in the theater with my son, Noah, then re-watched it on DVD with my husband, Kevin. It’s just as good the second time around. Heath Ledger was truly brilliant; it is still hard to believe that he’s gone. I’m so glad that the producers went for very talented people to fill out the cast. And Maggie Gyllenhaal was a definite improvement over Katie Holmes.

Eagle Eye, starring Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan: I loved this action techno-thriller. In fact, I like LaBeouf more and more in each movie I see him in. He has a bright future ahead of him - I hope he keeps his head on his shoulders and doesn’t do anything stupid. This is not only an edge-of-your-seat movie, but it is a commentary on how dangerous too much surveillance by the government can be.

Ghost Town, starring Ricky Gervais and Tea Leoni: Kevin and I both enjoyed this romantic comedy. Yes, it was predictable and not very original. But watching Gervais and Leoni makes it worth watching - they’re both terrific.

The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, and Dominic Cooper: Knightley was perfect as the 18th century’s “It Girl.” Known as the “Empress of Fashion,” Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire was her era’s Princess Di. Her marriage was filled with heartbreak, and the movie made me sad, but it was definitely very well done - and the costumes were gorgeous. It was also fun to see Mamma Mia!’s Dominic Cooper in a completely different role.
