The Sunday Salon - September 7, 2008
Since I’m a homeschooling mom, my spare time for reading goes down drastically once the school year starts. In the summer, we spend many afternoons at the park or the pool, and while the kids play and swim, I read. And read. And read. And then school starts, and I go through reading withdrawal. Sigh.
I did manage to finish one book this week:
Real intellectual reading, huh? And since my evening TV time with Kevin has consisted of one episode of Scrubs (on DVD) after another, I worry about my brain turning to mush. Good thing some of our school time has been spent reading good books aloud, like these:

Tales from Shakespeare by Tina Packer

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
I have one girl (11 1/2) and three boys (10, almost 9, and 6). I wasn’t sure how the boys wouuld react to The Penderwicks, since it is the story of four sisters, but we are all loving it - and close to finishing.
Now, that I finished my fluff novel (The High-Tech Knight - which I picked up to get my mind off the holocaust after two WWII novels) - I’m ready for something a little deeper.
I’ll be starting A Bell for Adano by John Hersey, which I’m reading for Semicolon’s Biblically Literate Book Club.
Oh, and lest I forget, I did receive one ARC in the mail this week:

Company of Liars by Karen Maitland
I also should mention that my Sunday reading time will be cut down for the next few months, since the regular NFL season has started, and I’ll be cheering for my beloved Seahawks every Sunday. The cool thing about football games, though, is the frequent commercials - I can get a lot of reading done in between plays.

There are a lot of days I wished I was a homeschooling mom. But, alas, we need both paychecks. And I’m not sure I could do justice to my kids.
Looks like you had some good reading this week (even if it was with the kids!)
I read for A Bell for Adano years ago, I believe. I believe I liked it, but it’s been a while.
As for Scrubs, I don’t believe there is anything wrong with a good laugh once in a while, and at least, it’s semi-intelligent — even intelligent at times.
Football and NASCAR both cut into my reading time today. In fact, I haven’t read a thing yet, as much as I talked about it today. Maybe I’ll get a little reading in tonight once I catch up on the Sunday Salon posts.
Stephanie - I know, we are blessed that my husband makes enough for me to stay home. We’re not well off - things can get very tight at times - but my freelancing helps some. Every little bit helps!
Unfinished Person - I agree - Scrubs is a great diversion. And I did waste a bunch of time watching the Seahawks get their butts kicked this afternoon. I should have read instead.
