What I’m reading lately
Mediterranean Summer: A Season on France’s Cote d’Azur and Italy’s Costa Bella is Chef David Shalleck’s memoir of cooking aboard a luxury yacht while traveling the Mediterranean. It’s highly entertaining, and his descriptions of the places, people, and food are vivid. His employers were very demanding, and gave him the unique challenge and instruction to never repeat a dish during the summer yachting season. He was to shop local markets, and take advantage of each region’s in-season produce to cook uniquely Italian cuisine. Here’s the book trailer, if you’re interested. Be warned, this book will make you hungry.
I’m slowly making my way through Kristin Lavransdatter III: The Cross by Sigrid Undset. I enjoyed parts I and II, but this one took a little bit longer to grab me. I’m hooked now, though, and I love the way these books demonstrate that no matter what era or country we live in, the challenges of marriage and family and raising children are the same.
The Bookman’s Wake is the second of John Dunning’s Cliff “Bookman” Janeway mysteries. I am enjoying this one even more than the first. I haven’t liked a mystery series this much since the summer I read from A is to Alibi to R is for Ricochet in Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone series.
So, what are you reading this summer?

The Sigrid Undset book is on my long-term list, and I’m looking forward to reading it. (I’ll read just about anything with a medieval setting, so this sounds like it’s right up my alley!) I’m glad to know that I’m not the one who’s interested in Undset. Thanks for the recommendation.
Bonnie - you’re welcome! I’m reading the Penguin Classics editions, that are translated by Tina Nunnally. I’ve heard that other translations make some pretty broad cuts - most of the overtly religious stuff. I like to know I’m getting the whole story - and the religious “stuff” is a major part of that time period and who Kristin is.
