Squids Will Be Squids: Fresh Morals, Beastly Fables by Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Lane Smith, is a perfect picture book read-aloud. It’s funny, the pictures are terrific, and I enjoyed it as much as the kids did.

Scieszka (of Time Warp Trio and Stinky Cheese Man fame) takes the idea of the fable - a story with a moral - and turns it topsy-turvy. We’ve heard them all: “don’t play with matches,” “elephants never forget,” etc. But you haven’t heard them this way, trust me. And you’ll learn some new ones, like “squids will be squids” and “don’t listen to talking bugs.”

We liked the book so much, we placed a bunch more of Scieszka’s picture books on hold at the library.
