New Moon

I loved Twilight, the first book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, and I was a little doubtful that she could write a sequel that matches up to it. She did. I started New Moon Saturday afternoon and finished it Sunday afternoon. In less than 24 hours I had devoured all 500+ pages. I stopped to feed the kids, eat, sleep, and that’s pretty much it.

New Moon picks up just a few months after the events of Twilight. Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are now in their senior year of high school. Edward has used his vampire beauty and powers of persuasion to guarantee that they have every class together. Bella is deliriously happy when she’s with Edward. When she’s away from him, she worries about the fact that she’s aging, and he’s not.

At her 18th birthday party at the Cullen’s home, Bella gets a paper cut while opening a gift. Her blood sends Edward’s “brother” Jasper into a frenzy, and sends Edward into a spiral of depression. Convinced that he is ruining Bella’s life, he tells her he doesn’t love her anymore, and the Cullen family moves away.

Bella’s grief is beyond description, although Meyer does a pretty good job of depicting how she feels. She is finally brought out of the depths of despair by renewing her friendship with Jacob Black. Her life seems to be getting back on track, but then Jacob undergoes a radical transformation, and Bella exchanges one problem for another.

If you haven’t jumped on the Twilight bandwagon yet, and it’s because they are vampire stories, please don’t let that stop you. I’ve never read another vampire book before - not even Anne Rice. And yet, I love these books. I already ordered New Moon, and it should be here in time for the weekend. Of course, if I want to get anything done this weekend, I shouldn’t even start it. ;)

This is a great review! I liked New Moon but liked Twilight better. I don’t think I’ve read any other vampire books either. That was the one thing that had me avoiding this book for a bit.

Have you heard about the book A New Dawn? It’s a borders exclusive collection of essays from authors about the Twilight series. I’m going to read it after I read Eclipse and then maybe the Host who knows! If I spread it out enough that should take me up to Breaking Dawn’s release.

Alea - I hadn’t heard of New Dawn until you mentioned it on your blog. It sounds interesting - let me know what you think of it.

Rubi just finished the 3rd book in the series.
She’s loved the series so far. She said she’s not fond of Bella, but really enjoys the series and can’t wait for the next book.
(She liked the series so much, she downloaded the ebook versions of books 2 and 3 from the library instead of waiting until they had “real” copies available.)

She’s also informed me we will be attending the midnight showing of the movie in December on opening night (if they have a midnight showing).

Kev - Natalie is almost finished with book 1. In fact, she’s close enough to being finished that I’m sure she’ll stay up tonight until she is. Ah, the joys of summer break…

I’m like you. I read Twilight twice in three days and ripped through the other two as soon as I could. Great escapism. I’m excited to read the last book as well as The Host.

Framed - I just finished Eclipse last night. Sigh. Now to wait until August…
